GROWING OLD GRACEFULLY

Surrey County Council, UK, and the University of Surrey launched a research project to develop a framework for assessing the environmental impact of bridge management activities. The framework uses life cycle assessment to evaluate environmental performance. The framework consists of three main components: classification of bridge design, codification of structure service-life strategy, and environmental life cycle assessment. The framework also provides the capacity to consider a range of service life activities (preventative maintenance, remedial work, strengthening work, accident repair, and structural alteration). Information on service life strategy was developed from a case study review of Surrey bridges. A series of test case studies were completed on brick, reinforced concrete and steel structures. A partnership with the Building Research Establishment is being forged to improve data, usability and flexibility of the system using Envest II software.
