Stricter environmental legislation has boosted the development of greener vehicles in the USA. Alternative fuels include fuel cells, ethanol, electricity and hybrids of electric and petrol power. Fuel cells represent the cleanest power source. They mix oxygen with hydrogen to provide power and emit only water vapour. A barrier to mass acceptance of alternative fuel cars is the lack of infrastructure for anything but petrol-fuelled vehicles. E85, a fuel that is a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, has been introduced. Improvements in battery technology have led to the introduction of electric cars by DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors. The hybrid electric vehicle that can use an internal combustion engine and an electric motor is perhaps the most promising alternative vehicle technology. The petrol engine is smaller and more efficient than that in a conventional car. The two best known hybrid electric cars are the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius.
