HOT FUTURE FOR COLD LAY

Rejuvenating worn roads using cold-mix recycling is an emerging technology. A pan European asphalt alliance was formed to work on the SCORE (Superior Cold Recycling) project. The aim of SCORE is to set a definitive benchmark for cold recycling of bituminous materials and to establish a common approach in Europe to the recycling of existing bitumen in the carriageway. As part of SCORE, Nynas Bitumen is examining the chemical and rheological properties of aged bitumen and establishing an emulsion binder that can rejuvenate a road. Computer techniques are being used to improve the structural design of a cold-mixed pavement. Nynas is also involved in an improved design of foamed bitumen for cold-mix use. The project team is developing specialist machinery for cold-mix processes. Road trials are planned for 2004.
