BOGIE DESIGN FOR BETTER DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE: EXAMPLE OF A LOCOMOTIVE BOGIE

Bombardier Transportation use computer analyses and simulations of vehicle dynamics in railway vehicle bogie design. The conflict of objectives between running stability and curve negotiation is discussed. The dynamic properties of wheelsets in the horizontal plane are outlined. The Flexifloat Bogie Family of Bombardier Transport is described. The new locomotive bogie is complemented with a wheelset coupling mechanism with separation of axle guidance and tractive force transfer. The wheelset is of modular construction and can be produced in four versions: stiff wheelset guidance, soft wheelset guidance, very soft wheelset guidance with coupling shaft, and very soft wheelset guidance with coupling shaft, supplemented with two coupling shaft dampers. A linearised stability analysis is presented of the different versions. The advantages of locomotive bogies with modular wheelset guidance are discussed.
