DIMENSIONLESS SENSITIVITY DIAGRAMS IN MECHANISTIC RAILWAY DESIGN

In order to quickly assess the effects on the maximum values of the track reactions when design parameters are changed, a tool named 'dimensionless sensitivity diagrams' has been developed. The method has been fully worked out for a track on a continuous Winkler foundation for both a single axle load and a double axle load. For a linear beam element model with discrete support, the method has been developed for a single axle load. The track reactions considered are the maximum values of rail deflection, rail moment, rail base stress, seat load between rail and sleeper, and vertical ballast stress directly beneath the sleeper. The design parameters that are input into the diagrams are the design axle load, the moment of inertia of the rail, the sleeper centre-to-centre spacing and the track modulus. For the continuous model also the sleeper width, the assumed length of the vertical supported part of the sleeper and the foundation coefficient are input parameters.
