INNOVATIVE EVALUATION METHODOLOGY REDUCES MAINTENANCE COSTS AT COPENHAGEN AIRPORT

RAMBOLL and Copenhagen Airports have developed an innovative methodology for evaluation of pavement condition and estimating trends in the future deterioration. The pavement condition is described by 3 condition indices (structural, functional and wearing course), each of them important pavement properties which must be kept at a minimum standard. The condition is based on a range of survey input normally carried out on pavements. Further the deterioration is based on the development in the results of the measurements carried out. The methodology has with success been applied to the pavements in Copenhagen Airport since the beginning of the 90s. As the methodology improves the basis of the decision-making on maintenance and rehabilitation activities, implementation of the methodology could lead to significant budget savings. Due to its success the methodology has been integrated into a pavement management system implemented in the airport, which now forms an important part in the decision-making process.
