DIRECT GAS SHIELD ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE SHIELDING EFFICIENCY

To avoid porosity in MIG and TIG welding the gas shield must exclude contaminants from the arc column and molten metal. Direct and continuous analysis of TIG and MIG shielding gas composition and contamination profiles by mass spectrometric probing was investigated and found feasible. The influence of some features of welding gun design, and physical factors controlling the quality of the gas shield, have been assessed using two experimental variable geometry torches. Results indicate that any particular design of welding torch might fall into one of three categories, one where no gas arc shield reaches the workpiece, one with rapid consolidation of gas arc shield, and one with optimum shielding.
