LESSONS FROM THE NEW AUSTROADS SEAL DESIGN MANUAL

The AUSTROADS Provisional Sprayed Seal Design Method (Revision 2000) was the principal outcome of a major seal design project which was itself a response to practitioner's concerns about the inconsistent performance of seals designed using the previous AUSTROADS (1990) seal design method. During 1991-93, seal trials were constructed throughout Australia, then they were monitored over a number of years and their performance data analysed to develop a new, performance related seal design procedure. The new seal design method is briefly described in this paper, including the input parameters, and its advantages. The AUSTROADS and Transit NZ seal design procedures are compared, using actual field data and designs. Finally, the potential benefits of the AUSTROADS Seal Design procedure to New Zealand roading authorities and industry are discussed.
