AUSTROADS PAVEMENT DESIGN MANUAL: IMPLICATIONS FOR NEW ZEALAND

In 1998 the Austroads Pavement Reference Group (APRG) established a Steering Group to revise the 1992 version of the Austroads Pavement Design Guide. A final draft of the revised guide was released to the industry in June 2001 for comment. It is understood that the final version of the revised guide, along with the associated NZ Supplement, will be adopted in New Zealand in mid-2003. The draft revised guide includes a number of proposed improvements over its predecessor. This paper describes the main changes and the associated implications for pavement designers in New Zealand. The main changes to the design guide include use of a full standard axle in the design analyses, a revised sub-layering scheme for unbound layers, adoption of a shift factor in the asphaltic concrete performance criterion and changes to the procedure for calculating the design traffic parameter.
