ROLLING A PERFECT SCORE : COMPACTION VIDEO GAME PROVING TO BE AN EFFECTIVE LEARNING TOOL

A new innovation has arrived on the virtual reality scene: the Xpactor, a 3-D hot-mix asphalt compaction trainer, which allows its user to train for the industry by playing a video game. Users experience simulated construction environments and receive real-time feedback based on their commands. Developed by a team of researchers at the University of Washington and funded by Transportation Northwest (TransNow), the Xpactor is intended to teach basic rolling principles, techniques and considerations without tying up equipment. The Xpactor can be installed on most current PCs with a capable graphics card. It is adaptable to a variety of training situations, since instructors can set paving conditions and then guide students through interactive environments. The Xpactor can be downloaded for free at TransNow's Web site, www.transnow.org.
