TEST TEMP : WITH TECHNOLOGY PUTTING SPEED INTO THE COMPACTION PROCESS, CURRENT METHODS FOR CHECKING DENSITY ARE ONLY TEMPORARY
Changing technologies in the industry have posed many challenges for paving contractors. There has been a practice of rewarding contractors who plan and coordinate projects quickly and carefully with bonuses; however, these bonuses became harder to earn after the introduction of Superpave and other contemporary mix designs, since these technologies require that contractors have knowledge of exact temperature at every stage of the rolling process. Before the advent of these technologies, contractors spent little time analyzing the mat's exact temperature. Now that mat temperature is of the essence, the old 2400-vpm vibratory rollers are too slow. Both accurate temperatures gauges and improved roller operators are needed if contractors are to accomplish jobs quickly and accurately with minimal cost and labor. Advanced technologies, such as a new 4000-vpm vibratory roller, will help contractors achieve this goal.
