CARIBBEAN STARS - ST KITTS & NEVIS : TWO PARADISE ISLANDS IN THE CARIBBEAN HAVE RECENTLY REVOLUTIONISED THEIR AIRPORT INFRASTRUCTURE

Describes steps taken by two exclusive tourist destinations in the Caribbean have modernized their airport infrastructure without compromising their commitment to preserving their island heritage and protecting their native environment. The first is St. Kitts (originally named St. Christopher), which has a new terminal designed by a French firm. It can handle around 300 people per hour and can go considerably higher. Each evening it handles an American Eagle flight from San Juan and is busiest from 1-4 p.m. as commuter traffic arrives from across the leeward islands chain. Future expansions include FBO facilities for business travelers and maintenance facilities for Caribbean Star, which moved its operating headquarters to St. Kitts in June. Nevis is the other destination undergoing upgrades. Monarch Airlines provides direct service from London. The terminal was officially renamed in honor of the country's current premier in September 2002 and features modern security measures, including 100% hold baggage. Five passenger airlines serve the airport, and nearly half the tourism traffic originates in the U.S., with a substantial number also coming from the U.K.
