BLASTING INTO THE 21ST CENTURY
This article looks at some of the latest technologies and methods that have provided tools for developing the drill and blast method in tunneling. Improvements in drilling performance have lead to higher penetration rates. Developments in automation and instrumentation have resulted in advanced angle and position indicating systems. Automation now can take care of the entire drilling cycle using a pre-programmed drilling pattern. Improvements to drilling tools have resulted in improved accuracy in collaring, better rigidity and straighter holes, and higher penetration rates. The article also describes the Process Concept in Tunneling, which involves the optimization of the different stages of the drill and blast cycle, includes the following components: 1) equipment that is able to efficiently repeat the planned work cycle; 2) instrumentation that leads to repeat accuracy; 3) planning that can be implemented in practice; and, 4) measurements that can be used for controlling the drill and blast process.
