BILBAO BENCHMARK FOR MICROTUNNELLING
This article focuses on the microtunneling project in Bilbao, Spain, initially begun in 1984, involving the installation of an expansive interceptor sewer network, designed to prevent ongoing pollution of the city's Rio del Nervion. Despite numerous contractual and legal disputes, the project has prevailed, giving Bilbao a reputation as possibly the microtunneling capital of Europe. The article also looks at the advantages and disadvantages in using microtunneling versus open cut pipeline installation, citing factors such as cost and disruption to traffic.
