TURNING STUDENTS ON TO TRANSPORTATION: A PILOT PROGRAM FOR RECRUITING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS INTO TRANSPORTATION CAREERS AND PROGRAMS OF STUDY
This paper describes a pilot retention and recruitment program that has been developed by the Center for Transportation Research and Education (CTRE), Iowa State University. The program is aimed at high school students and seeks to interest them in pursuing transportation-related careers. To develop the program, CTRE formed an advisory committee composed of experts in education and transportation. Activities during the 2002-2003 school year included an initial interest survey, a "show and tell" session feature a high tech snowplow, a booth at career day at two high schools, and a day-long field trip to a road construction site and college campus. The advisory committee is hopeful that the program will be successful in increasing awareness and enthusiasm for transportation-related careers.
