TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY INDICATORS: APPLICATION TO THE LYONS CONURBATION

In this study, the theme of sustainable development is used in the development of indicators of urban mobility. A set of indicators that simultaneously takes the three dimensions of sustainability--environmental, economic and social--into account is suggested. This paper presents the results of exploratory research carried out to verify the feasibility and the usefulness of elaborating such sustainable mobility indicators. Household travel survey data from Lyons, France is used as the basis for estimating values of the economic, environmental and social indicators. The Lyons case confirms that consistent results can be obtained with the possibility of close analysis within each dimension. Using household travel surveys results in strong coherence between the analyses carried out in the environmental, social and environmental fields. The set of indicators developed here should allow the comparison of different urban transport strategies within an urban area, and between different urban contexts, as well as through time. Directions for future research are discussed.
