NURTURING AN ENVIRONMENTAL PERSPECTIVE
In late 2002, the Office of Project Development and Environmental Review at the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sponsored a domestic scan tour to review State best practices for implementing environmental commitments, By reviewing successful processes, procedures, and methodologies, the scan team aimed to provide a framework for helping States benefit from experiences of other Departments of Transportation. This article details the findings of this FHWA scan tour project conducted in Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Wyoming. While these 7 states vary in the size and maturity of their transportation systems, they offer a diversity of approaches, proving that success in environmental protection can be achieved in a number of different ways.
