LOW-COST CARRIERS IN AUSTRALIA: EXPERIENCES AND IMPACTS
The paper outlines the history of entry and exit by low-cost airlines in Australia. It identifies two phases of entry, the early 1990s and the year 2000. Examined are the factors influencing success or failure in the light of North American and European experience. The paper examines the strategies adopted by low-cost carriers and the competitive responses of the incumbents. The impacts of low-cost carriers on fares, costs, and profitability are examined and lessons are drawn from the experience.
