CRUISING WITH HEIGHTENED SECURITY STANDARDS
The events of September 11, 2001 had an immediate effect on all aspects of the transportation industry. This article focuses on the cruise industry that has had an enviable safety record. Existing regulations, proactive planning, and a strong U.S. Coast Guard and industry partnership made it possible to address the increased security demands of the post-September 11 terrorist threat. The article reviews some of the specific measures the industry has implimented since it began operating at security level III, the highest level.
