INNOVATION OF MAINTENANCE: TOWARD THE WORLD'S TOP LEVEL MAINTENANCE TECHNOLOGIES
JR East operates 12,000 trains every day on the Shinkansen, over a total of about 7500 km and carries a total of about 16,000,000 passengers. To support that volume means that maintenance has to be carried out day in and day out. This article discusses the company's effort to establish the world's top level maintenance technologies by setting up three major roles: cost reduction, advanced reliability and support of maintenance work. A brief introduction of the JR East research and development activities on maintenance is provided. Also discussed is the company's cooperation with other companies including related manufacturers, as well as the Railway Technical Research Institute, universities, and other research institutes outside the company.
