THE EMPTY RUNNING AND RETURN LOADING OF ROAD GOODS VEHICLES. IN: TRANSPORT LOGISTICS

This paper's aim is to explain reduction in empty running with reference to the following nine possible factors: Deregulation of the road haulage industry; externalization of road transport to third party carriers; cyclical activity in the economy; increase in average trip length; change in trip structure; greater balancing of inter-regional flows; greater use of clearing houses/load matching services; increase in the recovery of packaging material and return of handling equipment; and greater effort by haulers and shippers to exploit opportunities for return loading. The increasing efforts of firms to find return loads and the growth in the return flow of packaging material and handling equipment are identified as having had a significant effect on the decline of empty running. They are examined in greater detail. Additionally, the development of supply chain management, advances in vehicle routeing software along with increasing road transport costs are likely to promote more balanced vehicle loading.
