EFFICIENT UNIT LOADS. IN: TRANSPORT LOGISTICS
The paper discusses a survey conducted for the European grocery industry to examine implementation of Efficient Unit Loads (EUL) to benefit Efficient Consumer Response (ECR), a concept that meant faster, more frequent deliveries. The survey results indicated that there is no one universal EUL. Recognizing the importance of EULs, the paper identifies two key issues that need to be addressed to ensure successful implementation of EULs: A new item is required, to be used across the total supply chain, which offers space saving advantages of pallets, with the handling efficiency of roll cages; while retailers expect to derive three quarters of the savings from EULs, the efficiency savings can only be achieved through manufacturer investment and a compensatory mechanism that is required to redress the balance and make efficient loads a 'win/win'.
