JIT AND CORPORATE TRANSPORT: AN INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON. IN: TRANSPORT LOGISTICS

This research examines changes in the implementation of Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing programs in France and United States. Two specific issues were studied: how the logistics function in French firms is responding to the implementation and diffusion of JIT manufacturing programs, and how the responses in the two countries were similar and/or different by comparing data from the two surveys. The survey results of French and American manufacturers yielded similar results with respect to the experience with JIT manufacturing. In both countries, a company commitment to JIT has meant major changes for those involved in logistics. Among changes noted were the mix of modes used and criteria used in selecting carriers. A dramatic increase in the extent of communications with carriers and vendors, and a substantial improvement in the quality of the information in these exchanges were also mentioned frequently.
