DISTRIBUTION STRATEGIES THAT MINIMIZE TRANSPORTATION AND INVENTORY COSTS. IN: TRANSPORT LOGISTICS

The paper focuses on distributing items from a supplier to customer located in a surrounding region. The analysis considers all transportation and inventory costs incurred in distributing the items without regard to how costs are allocated. Inventory includes items waiting to be shipped from the supplier, items in transit to customers, and items waiting to be used by customers. The objective is to minimize the sum of transportation and inventory costs. The paper redevelops and evaluates an analytic method that aids in minimizing the sum of transportation and inventory costs for a supplier who distributes items to many customers. Existing transportation and inventory literature is merged by explicitly considering vehicle routing costs and inventory costs that are related to shipment size.
