PLAYING THE NUMBERS GAME IN MUMBAI
Mumbai is one of India's leading commercial and shipping centers that is currently facing an enormous challenge of overcrowding on its suburban railway. The present population of Mumbai agglomeration is about 16 million, and the heavy peak time demand between north and south means the suburban railway has to carry about 6 million commuters each working day. This is the highest transport capacity in the world, exceeding even Tokyo and Seoul. Overcrowding has reached such an extent that a nine-car train carries 5000 passengers at peak times compared with a design capacity of 1700. The article reviews system improvement plans.
