COMPARISON AT ZONE AND FIELD MODELING IN TUNNEL FIRE SIMULATIONS
For computer simulations of the systemic combination of physical phenomena likely to occur during accidental fires in tunnels, field modeling (CFD) in 3-D appears theoretically more relevant than zone (i.e. finite volume) modeling. In the context of practical use of existing software, however, zone modeling and field modeling present a number of specific advantages and drawbacks. So far it is still considered that either approach must be taken into consideration in the effort towards a better understanding of those phenomena, with the final aim of a better control of the consequences of such fires. This paper takes stock on this issue, with the example of the use of two computer models for the simulation of fire scenarios in a tunnel with a zone model named CIFI, and a 3-D field model, based on a commercial CFD software. An assessment of the respective relevance of either approach in the cases considered opens up an investigation of the issue of their possible mutual contribution in the wider context of fires in real tunnels.
