MOBILE FAN FOR RAILWAY TUNNEL SMOKE VENTILATION
This paper describes the results of trails carried out to evaluate the efficacy of mobile smoke ventilation fans for use in railway tunnels. The mobile fan is part of a concept that allows fire brigades to perform safe and effective search and rescue operations inside a tunnel. The fan was shown to be effective, taking about five minutes to reverse the direction of air flow through the tunnel. With the final velocity varying between 1.5-2 m/s, it took about 6-7 minutes to ventilate the smoke from one end of the tunnel, back to the seat of the fire that was about 400 m from the tunnel opening, and about 15 minutes entirely to clear the smoke from the tunnel when the fire had been put out.
