A WHOLE SYSTEMS APPROACH TO BEST PRACTICE IN NDT

Recent catastrophic incidents on the railways have shown the effects of increasing fragmentation of inspection responsibilities. Moreover, there has been concern for some time about the reliability of inspection work in the oil industry, where documented procedures, trained personnel and state-of-the-art equipment have not guaranteed high quality NDT. A survey of working practices in NDT for the American Petroleum Institute has concluded that a more holistic approach is needed. This paper will discuss some of the issues and suggest a way forward.
