WHAT'S THE FAVORITE TOPPING? : DENVER COMPARING ASPHALT AND CONCRETE OVERLAYS
This article relates how the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Region 6 chose to use whitetopping concrete overlay to address rutting and continual maintenance on a high-traffic asphalt highway in Denver. A 6 in. layer of concrete was used to cover the 6 in. layer of asphalt. The use of whitetopping allowed CDOT to speed up the process as well as providing a maintenance-free surface. The CDOT has also built an asphalt overlay section on the north side of the roadway in order to provide a mechanism for comparing concrete and asphalt performance.
