THE YEAR 2002 SURVEY : CEO PERSPECTIVES ON THE CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE PROSPECTS OF THE THIRD-PARTY LOGISTICS INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES

This article examines the results of a survey of CEOs asked about current conditions in the third-party logistics industry and future outlooks. The article also analyzes the results in comparison to previous surveys. The results lead the authors to raise important questions about future prospects and possible strategic responses to address current conditions. Service providers have faced a number of challenges with lower volumes due to the soft economy and reluctance of new clients to finalize contracts. In addition, terrorist attacks have raised security concerns. Results of the survey come from 20 executives of what are believed to be among the largest companies based on sales volume. Includes list of participating companies and breakdown of areas in which they specialize. Among highlights: mergers and acquisitions are speeding globalization of the industry; continued downward pressure on prices is expected; leading opportunities include further integration of supply chain information systems; difficulty in retaining qualified people; and extensive energy devoted to melding merged companies.
