TTI RESEARCH SHOWS MORE TEXANS BUCKLE UP
Surveys by the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) show that the "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement campaign has had a positive impact on seat belt use in the state. The survey, based on direct observation, showed that compliance was up 5%, to 81 5. For every percentage point that Texas safety belt use rises, 25 lives are saved and 586 fewer people will be injured in crashes. If use were to rise another four percent, annual savings of $280 million would be realized. And when a driver is buckled, children tend to be buckled, too. The program has enforcement periods during the Memorial Day and Thanksgiving holidays, with 10 urban areas receiving extra attention. They were chosen because that is where the majority of the state's population resides.
