In this article, the author looks at retail operations at airports, identifying those criteria that makes for successful airport retailing. The first on the list is that an airport operator should have a good understanding of customer shopping and spending behavior, as well as the retail world outside of the airport setting. Four key developments in the wider retail world are discussed: value retailing, the growing customer appeal of brands, variety and frequent change in product ranges, and increased focus on store environment and shopping ambience. Finally, the author suggests that an airport's target should focus on retail operators who can achieve high productivity of sales and gross profit.
