ALL CHANGE AT DETROIT
This article gives an overview of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport's new Northwest Airlines terminal. The one-mile long Edward McNamara Northwest WorldGateway Terminal facility has a 30 million- passenger capacity and includes 97 international and domestic gates handling 570 flights daily. The new facility cost $1.2 billion to construct and is owned by the county authorities with Northwest providing management responsibilities. Measuring in at two million square feet, it is the largest terminal built in the U.S. since a 100-gate facility that opened in Pittsburgh in 1992. A unique feature about the terminal is that no local funding was used; rather, it was funded through federal and state grants, airline fees, and passenger facility charges.
