A GERMAN EXAMPLE FOR A PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP IN TRANSPORT RESEARCH : ZIV - INSTITUTE FOR INTEGRATED TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT SYSTEMS AT DARMSTADT UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
This paper describes the three-and-a-half year partnership, ZIV, the Institute for Integrated Traffic and Transport Systems, at the Darmstadt University of Technology, located in the central part of Germany, Frankfurt RheinMain. The organizational structure of the institute, which focuses on not only integrated technical solutions, but also functional, organizational and institutional integration, is described. ZIV was founded as a limited company whose shareholders are the Regional Public Transportation Authority, the Frankfurt Airport Authority, and the Association for Promoting Integrated Traffic and Transport Systems. It has a scientific advisory board of 12 professors. Describes current research activities, which fall into transport infrastructure and management, traffic engineering and traffic control, public transport, organizational concepts for traffic management and mobility services, railway systems, and navigation and positioning systems. Sample projects are provided for each category. An important element is the partnership with the private sector in bringing research findings to market.
