EARLY RETURNS
Several airports have already implemented automated, integrated, "inline" baggage handling systems to screen all checked bags as required by the Aviation and Transportation Security Act. This article discusses how these airports planned, designed and implemented their systems. One key element to success was seeking input, especially from airlines or from European experts, since some European airports have been screening baggage for over a decade. Leveraging existing assets and resources, setting up good communication systems with all stakeholders in the project, and closely managing each aspect of the project were also crucial to successful implementation.
