FIRE REACTION OF FIRE-PROOFED OR SURFACE TREATED MATERIALS

LA REAZIONE AL FUOCO DI MATERIALI IGNIFUGATI O PROTETTI CON TRATTAMENTI SUPERFICIALI

The materials up to now tested at the R.I.N.A. Laboratory are over a hundred; the overall examination of the results obtained evinces that, in order to satisfy the requirements of passive fire-protection on board, special man-made materials of good properties have recently been worked out. For surface lining of walls, in particular, there is an ample choice of plastic laminates, which succeed in being classified in the two highest classes (I and II). So far as fire retarding treatments are concerned, a satisfactory and persistent effectiveness of impregnation treatments was found. Treatments by painting did not always prove suitable for the purpose. In addition, such treatments showed a very poor capacity to withstand ageing conditions in hot-humid atmospheres. The materials examined in this research from the point of view of fire reaction were, at times, submitted to treatments with substances toxic in themselves or somehow noxious, or such that, by pyrolysis or other phenomena, might bring about such products. The problem of fumes released by fire-proofed materials, although of remarkable interest, has not been dealt with in this research.
