DRIVING ABANDONED CARS OFF THE STREETS

The decline in the value of scrap metal is correlated with an increase in the number of abandoned cars in the UK. The measures implemented by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham to reduce the number of abandoned vehicles are described. Three officers are dedicated to the removal of abandoned vehicles. A free vehicle recovery and removal scheme has been introduced for motorists wanting to dispose of their vehicles. Normally, 7-day notices are placed on vehicles that are reported as abandoned, but new legislation allows vehicles to be moved immediately. The Association of London Government has negotiated with DVLA to provide instant electronic access to its database of car ownership, allowing owners to be traced. The taxpayer pays the costs of dealing with abandoned vehicles. Untaxed vehicles are being targeted as they are seen as future abandoned vehicles.
