THE UK MARKET FOR RAIL MAINTENANCE

The New Maintenance Programme (NMP) of Network Rail (NR) is a central reform to improve NR's control over maintenance of the UK rail network. The NMP will redefine the responsibilities of NR and contractors, with NR having more input at most stages. The new policy will be initially implemented in the Anglia region. NR has reached agreement in principle to take direct responsibility for inspection and day-to-day maintenance of the infrastructure in the Reading area when the present maintenance contract expires. NR is also developing improved asset information and management tools. Action plans have been developed to address the shortcomings of Railtrack/NR. The full support of suppliers and contractors will be required if the improvements are to be delivered. NR's Maintenance Information Management System (MIMS) is a single industry-wide work and asset management system for work carried out under the IMC2000, IMC2 and RT1A rail maintenance contracts.
