DESIGN MANUAL FOR ROADS AND BRIDGES VOL 8: TRAFFIC SIGNS AND LIGHTING, SECTION 4: TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AT ROADWORKS, PART 4: THE MOBILE LANE CLOSURE TECHNIQUE FOR USE ON MOTORWAYS AND OTHER DUAL CARRIAGEWAY ROADS

All Mobile Lane Closure (MLC) operations on motorways and other dual carriageway roads must comply with this Standard. It supersedes TD 49/97 published in February 1997, incorporating Amendment 1 dated August 1998, and the parts of Topic 6 of Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual and in TA 61 that refer to the MLC technique. The standard covers health and safety, equipment, layouts, planning and operation, operations at night for mobile lane closure. There are 6 appendices: (a) Performance specification: lorry mounted crash cushions; (b) Application for a vehicle special order; (c) Specification for automatic impact brakes for mobile lane closure block vehicles; (d) Light arrow system for MLC block vehicles; (e) Specification for high grade retroflective sign face material for use on mobile lane closures only; and (f) Illumination of signs for night-time use.
