SERVICE ROUTES OR LOW-FLOOR BUSES? STUDY OF THE TRAVEL BEHAVIOUR AMONG ELDERLY AND DISABLED PEOPLE
This paper analyzes the travel behaviour of elderly people and those entitled to Special Transportation Services (STS) in Sweden. The aim was to provide a basis for estimating how many people entitled to STS might be able to travel on Service Route (small, accessible buses) or low-floor scheduled public transport. An opinion study of those travelling was carried out, with quantitative measurements of travel, followed by experiments on boarding and leaving three different types of buses. The evaluation showed that up to two-thirds of people entitled to STS should be able to travel by Service Route traffic and up to one-third in low-floor buses. The Service Route buses were already popular among the elderly and those entitled to STS, although there would always be some travellers needing the extra personal assistance available with STS.
