ACCESSIBILITY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN RURAL INDIA
This paper reviews the situation in rural India for people with mobility difficulties. Financial and cultural barriers exist which prevent disabled people from having mobility or even basic education. They are not aware of their rights to the same facilities as able-bodied citizens. An informal group of non-governmental organizations, Disability Network, has attempted to improve accessibility for disabled people by lobbying government agencies to increase provision. Community-based rehabilitation is arranged by Mobility India to involve the whole community in improving accessibility. Changes are needed to national legislation to enforce improvements: better roads in rural areas and inexpensive mobility aids would help disabled people to have more mobility.
