SAFE CARRIAGE OF WHEELCHAIRS IN VEHICLES
This paper concentrates on the issues relating to the safe carriage of wheelchair users in public and collective transport. Wheelchairs are now designed for a variety of uses and different designs are differing shapes and weights, and need to be designed so that they are strong enough to be used as vehicle seats. Safety principles for the carriage of wheelchairs and occupants are considered. A major cause of danger in the design of a restraint system is human error, whether from cost cutting or from negligence. Technical standards are being developed to include crash testing to prove safety at a certain crash pulse. Universal interfaces and automatic docking systems are seen as a future possibility.
