REDUCING THE RISK: A GUIDE TO WHEELCHAIR AND OCCUPANT RESTRAINT SYSTEMS IN MOTOR VEHICLES

This paper aims to highlight the need for ongoing research and discussion about transport for disabled people who occupy wheelchairs when travelling in motor vehicles, with reference to the Australian situation. The Australian Disability Service Commission aimed to produce best practice guidelines. This process included review of existing standards and guidelines, discussion with suppliers and transport operators, and meeting representatives of disability organizations. It transpired that there were many problems in supplying clients with optimal equipment that fulfilled postural, mobility, transport and life style needs. In many instances requirements for optimum posture were compromised by transport requirements. A case study is presented which shows the need for all service providers to work together to ensure that policies relating to transport for disabled people are complementary.
