CENTRIFUGAL MODEL TESTS IN SOIL MECHANICS

CENTRIFUGE TIL GEOTEKNISKE MODELRORSOEG

Recently a large centrifuge has been installed at the engineering academy of Denmark in Copenhagen. The facility will be used to perform model tests of structures in soil. The axis of rotation is vertical, and both the model container and the counterweight are hinged to the rotor. The effective radius of the machine is 2.3 M and the model mass is 1250 kg at a maximum of 80 times gravity. Characteristics of the equipment are described in detail. The concept of centrifugal testing is the increase of all body-forces in the small-scale model by means of the centrifugal acceleration, so that the stresses in the model and the full-scale prototype will be the same. Future application is briefly indicated by two projects under development concerning buried pipes and footings on sand. /TRRL/
