RWIS: WEATHERING THE STORM
This article focuses on Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS). It first gives an overview of RWIS sensor technology, noting that remote weather sensors have been around since the 1930s. The article next discusses how state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are utilizing RWIS technology. The remainder of the article examines the following areas: predictive weather information, freezing precipitation clearance, RWIS sensor technology, and communications techniques. The article concludes with a discussion on the benefits of RWIS.
