ITS FUNDING UNDER SCRUTINY : DESPITE SPECULATION FROM BUSH ADMINISTRATION, CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS EXPECT ITS PROGRAM TO ACQUIRE INCREASED FUNDING FROM TEA-3

This article looks at funding issues related to the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and the upcoming reauthorization of TEA- 21, also known as TEA-3. It relates that even though the Bush Administration may seek a reduction in ITS funding, Congressional leaders and different committees and organizations are prepared to battle for an increase in federal funds. The article points out recent reports, as well as analyses by advisory committees, which are striving for an increases in funding for ITS research, education, and program support. One report concluded that a new program is in order for ITS deployment, operations, and management, using a formula distribution of money to states similar to the ones used for more DOT highway programs.
