BUS RAPID TRANSIT : THE HIGH-QUALITY, LOWER-COST ALTERNATIVE
This article discusses how bus rapid transit (BRT) has the potential to offer higher quality and higher capacity transportation with lower costs and increased flexibility compared to rail and bus transit. It offers the following as essential elements in establishing an efficient and effective BRT system. The elements also focus on attracting the attention and support of the public and riders, especially in terms of branding the service as comfortable, convenient, reliable, affordable, and a premium transportation service. They include: high speed and capacity, sleek and modern design, properly designed stations, off-board fare collection, optical guidance system for vehicle control, traffic system integration, and flexibility in rapidly growing areas. The article also briefly mentions some successful BRT initiatives.
