STANSTED'S SMARTCONTROL : BAA HAS CHOSEN ALSTOM'S SMARTCONTROL AS ITS AIRFIELD LIGHTING CONTROL SYSTEM
This article describes development and deployment of a fully automated, surface movement guidance control system that is the first use of wide-screen LCD touch-screen technology for taxiway routing. It is engineered to deliver enhanced routing capabilities, route selection and ease the workload of air traffic controllers and ground maintenance personnel. The system is already operational at London Gatwick, London Luton, Birmingham and East Midlands in the UK in addition to six other international airports. Describes the modular elements, the issues addressed by the project team and validation testing. The system is expected to be operational for November 2003.
