ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN 'PASSIVE' SAFETY
The article defines multidisciplinary research into 'passive vehicle safety' as studying everything: anatomy, statistics, data processing and material physics that could help protect road users in an accident. As more than 40,000 people die on Europe's roads every year, the European Union and the European automotive industry and public research centers are pooling their expertise to come up with solutions. Specific approaches include: awareness of road safety for children; enhanced coach and bus occupant safety; and vehicle structure and safety criteria.
