EFFICIENCY ENHANCEMENT IN THE MAINTENANCE OF RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS
One of the many objectives of the former European state railways that have been transformed into independent companies is to implement customer oriented transit services while enhancing economic viability. The article looks at the challenge that the maintenance of railway infrastructure systems gives to the considerable reduction of maintenance financing. Described are the implementation of the maintenance efficiency enhancement approaches that are expected to lead to a clear reduction in travel times to the worksites and to shorter waiting times. The approach described has resulted in an overall increase in maintenance productivity of 20-30% and, as a result, a reduction in maintenance costs of 10-15%.
